Pullman, Philip
THE GOLDEN COMPASS
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1996. Fine in like jacket.. Original quarter black cloth, black paper boards, gilt-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($20.00) color pictorial dust jacket with illustration by Eric Rohmann. [10], 399, [5] pages. Signed by Pullman ink black ink on title page. Signed first American edition, first printing, and the first edition to use the title THE GOLDEN COMPASS - the UK edition was titled NORTHERN LIGHTS. The DARK MATERIALS trilogy reads much like an "anti-Narnia" (Burton Hatlen), but offers no less magic, fantasy, and wonder for all that. Both Lewis and Pullman drew inspiration from Milton's PARADISE LOST: in fact, this edition's differing title comes from a verse in Milton's epic, misread by the American editor and kept as THE GOLDEN COMPASS after Pullman and his UK publisher had settled on the title NORTHERN LIGHTS. Carnegie Medal Winner. This is a fantastic copy.
