Original wrappers, contained within three later blue buckram boxes, lettered in gilt on the 'spines'Provenance: Essex Institute, Salem, Mass.; Eric SextonThe Sexton copy: a fine complete run of this important and influential record of colonial and early federal architecture in America.This rare complete run constitutes one "of the richest sources of data, measured drawings, and photographs available to the student of important Early American wooden buildings ... [The series began as] a generous gift to the architectural profession. the monographs distributed bimonthly from 1915 through 1924, constituting the initial ten volumes, were produced and sent to some 5,000 architects principally in areas where white pine was readily available, at the expense of the White Pine Bureau. This was an association formed by a group of white pine producers ... the monographs were conceived [by the editor Russell Whitehead, and George F. Lindsay, the Chairman of the White Pine Bureau] as promotional brochures for 'suggesting the architectural uses of white pine and its availability today [sic.] as a structural wood'" (Charles Magruder). Volumes XI to XVII appeared as an independent publication, still edited by Whitehead, from 1925 until 1931 when the final separate issue was published.
