This is the first English edition of this work, being an abridged translation of Sarytschew's Russian original of 1802. Gavrila A. Sarytschew (also known as Garvill Andreevich Sarychev) was a surveyor on this official expedition sent out by Catherine II to explore the Arctic and North Pacific Oceans.
