Contemporary half morocco by B. Alipin(?), Gendingan, Semarang (Java, Indonesia).

The maps include an excellent general map of the Dutch East Indies (modern Indonesia), more detailed maps of the southwest coast of Sumatra, the middle third of Java, and maps and plans of smaller regions, individual forts, battles, etc. Gerlach (1811-1906) taught at the Royal Military Academy at The Hague. With a contemporary owner's name on the half-title. The binding, though entirely European in style, has the stamp of a binder on the island of Java: "B. Alipin (?)/Boekbinder/Gendingan/Semarang." With small tears in three of the folding maps, one affecting the cartographic image, but otherwise good, with occasional foxing and with some reinforcing in the gutter margin.
