[In] Prevost, Histoire Generale des Voyages, Volume VIII. Circa 1749. Dimentions: folio 24x37 cm. (Print: 20x35 cm; passpartout: 33x46 cm). Original copper engraving, uncoloured as issued. Very slight creasing but a bright, fresh impression, in near fine, clean condition. Map showing the city of Goa on a bird"s eye view based on a 16th Century engraving appeared in Ortelius, and later very much reproduced and reengraved in the works of de Hondt, Lafiteau and Didot, with slight changes. In this case it appears, as printed at bottom right, in «Tome VIII, fig. Nº IX» of Prevost"s Histoire des Voyages. Decorative cartouche with the most notorius places in town, two elefants working at the pier, and many ships on the river. Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine, and also Official Hydrographer to the French King and one of the most important French cartographers of the mid-eighteenth century. Bellin produced a substantial number of important separately issued maps, particularly reflecting continuing discoveries and political events in the Americas. [PT] Panorâmica da cidade de Goa.
