[16], 903, [28] pp.Rare first edition of the famous Jesuit Bellarmino's Counter-Reformist work on the singing of psalms and meditation, a practise often portrayed as Protestant. According to WorldCat there are only copies of the present first edition in Italian libraries. Three separate issus of this work were published at the same time, which are identical save the impressum and colophon: the present issue by Bozzola, an issue by Pietro Maria Marchetti and one by Tebaldino.Though a member of the committee that condemned Galileo's theses, when Galileo was much troubled by the fact that people thought he was under some severe penance, Bellarmino wrote him a certificate stating that Galileo was under no penance whatsoever, but only had signed a declaration that his theses were in contradiction with the words of the scripture. One of his famous sayings was “an ounce of peace is better than a pound of victory”. Several owner's marks on the front paste-down and first free endleaf. Mark at foot of title-page erased with some loss of text. Contemporary annotation on last page of preliminaries. A faint stain at the foot of the last few pages. Crack in foot of spine.
