Aden - a Coaling Station in the Red Sea, 16.9.57.
Aden: 1857. Original sketch in pencil, water- and body-colour (170 x 250 mm), neatly trimmed and mounted on card, initialled "DSG" in pencil, and titled as above in ink on the mount. Window-mounted with wash-line, framed and glazed in handmade maple frame with gilt sight-line. Greene (1826-1892), served with the Royal Artillery, rising to the rank of Major-General. This striking and characteristic view was taken during his voyage out to India to take part in the Indian Mutiny, services recorded in his Views in India, from Drawings taken during the Seapoy Mutiny, published 1859. Provenance: Sir Alexander Moncrieff (1829-1906) and thence by descent.
