Leopold, Aldo
A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There
Oxford University Press, New York, 1949. True first edition of Leopold's natural history classic. Hardcover, full green cloth, silver titling and geese (first state binding), first printing with 1949 on title page and copyright page. Book shows very light wear, hint of bumping to spine ends & one corner, minor rub to spine; jacket (first state, with blurbs for other Oxford books) price-clipped & showing some edgewear, with chipping to head of spine, creases & short tear to upper front panel, longer tear, minor stain & some rubbing to rear panel; minor foxing/spotting to fore-edge. No names or internal marks. Text clean; xiii, 226 pages, b/w illustrations. [This book is bibliographically slightly eccentric. The true first edition was issued in green cloth, with silver titling & decoration, and the correct 1949 date on both title & copyright page; with a jacket listing other Oxford titles on the rear panel. Later printings are normally stated as such on the copyright page, but either Oxford found a batch of old sheets or someone forgot to label a later printing, as copies appear with the 1949 date on title and copyright page, but bound in bluegreen hardcovers (not cloth) with black titling and decoration, and a jacket touting Leopold's Round River, which was not published until 1953.] Size: 5¾" by 8½" [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
