[Group of Fourteen Mounted Vernacular Photographs Documenting a Trip from New Orleans to Mexico]
[Mexico and Texas, 1898. Very good.. Fourteen albumen photographs mounted to cards, each approximately 4 x 4 or 4 x 4.5 inches on mounts 5.5 x 5.5 inches (five photos) or 4.25 x 6.5 inches (nine photos). Images captioned on verso. Light wear and soiling, faint tideline to one mount, but images generally strong and clean. A nice group of vernacular photos documenting a trip to Monterrey, Mexico, by way of San Antonio, Texas. Monterrey is the capital and largest city in Nuevo Leon, the province just south of the border with Texas. What we presume to be the earliest images from the trip are from San Antonio captioned on the back of the cards as "Swinging Bridge, San Antonio" and "San Pedro Springs, Mr. Brewer & Anna on Bridge Feb. 3 - 98." Both show park scenes with individuals standing on various bridges in the distance. A third photo from Texas depicts two men and a woman seated in a carriage behind a horse; a gazebo and several buildings are visible in the background. A pair of images depicts the Rio Grande, one of the Mexican side and the other of the U.S. side of the river. Eight further images are noted as being in Mexico. The first of these is captioned "Mexican Village, Mexican National R.R." and depicts three buildings, presumably houses, surrounded by wooden fencing. Three people are visible in the photo, all of them women -- a girl stands near the end of the fence on the right hand side, a woman stands at the other end of the fence toward the left center, and a woman sits in the shade of her porch on the left.
