Small illustrations in black and white to the upper and lower panels of the wraps, 8 large, pochoir - "colorié au patron"- roundel plates, each story with an historiated initial, numerous illustrations to the text. Wraps a little rubbed and browned, spine spotted and slightly creased, judicious restoration to the joints, and spine particularly at the ends, minor foxing to the edges, and similarly slight off-setting from the plates, but overall an excellently preserved copy of a fragile book, here unopened in the original wraps. First edition, this number 46 of 50 on "papier Whatman". Uncommon, just 9 copies - whether the Whatman or ordinary paper state not recorded - located by WorldCat, 6 of these in North America, BnF shows only a facsimile edition of 2008. No appearances in auction records. Lucien Laforge (1889-1952) is an artist who has received little "academic" recognition, Vollmer, for example, provides no dates for him, noting simply that he was a resident of Paris, mentioning only his contribution to an exhibition of the Indépendants at the Gallerie Zak in 1948, and just a single publication, his illustrations for Lucien Descaves satirical anti-War fable Ronge-Maille vainqueur. However, Laforge was a prolific artist-illustrator whose work deserves wider appreciation, the present piece exemplifies the dream-like quality and striking palette that characterises his best work.
