AUSTIN, Mary Lee
Archive]: "My Wardrobe"
California, 1940. Bradbound paper wrappers measuring 8.5" x 11". Contains 31 pages of drawings. Very good or better with toning, creasing, and small tears. A fashion journal created by a young California woman, Mary Lee Austin, documenting her wardrobe in November of 1940. It appears this was part of a school project as a, frankly unjust, "C+" is written in red pencil on the final page. Each page contains a drawing, most of which are colored, and a description of the outfit including fabric. One page reads, "blue and white striped searsucker dirndle skirt worn with white cotton blouse and red chain necklace;" another reads, "white net over white satin slip formal, aqua bow around waist, silver shoes." Pages towards the end of the journal feature accessories such as necklaces, shoes, gloves, and purses, and another shows her foundation wear including "6 pair shorts, 3 brassieres, 1 girdle, 1 pair lace shorts." The last few pages are an "individual clothing inventory" where Mary has written the article of clothing, when she purchased it, condition, cost, and "conclusions drawn from the purchase such as "worn out too soon" or "good buy." Additionally included is a program for a 1932 commencement from Turlock Union High School is laid in. A unique item detailing a young woman's fantastic wartime fashions. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
