Napier & Company,, 1895. A masterpiece" of the Birmingham arts and crafts movement Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to front board in gilt, edges untrimmed. Text printed within illustrated woodcut frames throughout. A very good copy, some minor marks to cloth but barely rubbed, entirely sound, fresh within but for tanned endpapers. Ink ownership inscription to front endpaper. First edition of this "masterpiece" of the Birmingham arts and crafts movement (Crawford, p. 89). This is a beautiful example of the work of the Birmingham Group, an informal collective of painters and craftsmen, the Birmingham Post reviewing it as "a refined little book which accomplishes much" (Cooper, p. 90). A limited run of 50 copies bound in vellum was also issued. "Amy Mark was a pupil of the Birmingham School of Art and her pathetic allegory found a perfect echo in Bernard Sleigh's wood engravings" (ibid.). She had previously published a collection of fairy poems illustrated by Gertrude M. Bradley, New Pictures in Old Frames (1894) and exhibited an embroidered hanging entitled "The Enchanted Sea" at the sixth Arts & Crafts Exhibition in 1899. Sleigh (1872-1954) is now best known for his work, An ancient mappe of Fairyland published in 1920. The map depicted a sprawling imaginary landscape populated by fabled characters.
