Palestine Board of Higher Studies, Jerusalem, 1930. Quarto. Unpaginated. 110 pages. Beige printed wrappers with black lettering on the front cover. This is a copy of the 1930 examination presented by the Department of Education, of British Mandatory Palestine, on the event of matriculation of secondary school students, in order to test their aptitude in a variety of pre-proscribed subjects. These formal examinations were first initiated in 1924, and sought a standardized format for educational examination, to allow students to matriculate directly to universities in Britain, from around the British Empire, and other areas of the middle east. These examinations were developed in close coordination with these other institutions of higher education. The exam is presented in English, Hebrew and Arabic. The students had to satisfy the examination board in six subjects. Three were mandatory: English, language and mathematics, while an additional three could be of the students choosing, from a variety of other subjects including, chemistry, physics, botany, geography and history. These exams would continue to be administered until Israeli independence in 1948. There is a fold-out topographical map bound in at the back of the book block (for the geography section of the exam). All content printed in English, Hebrew and Arabic text. Wrappers with chipping, tears, and creasing to extremities, including the spine. Side edge of the book block with some light stains and smudges. Pages throughout with a few sporadic instances of small stains, including the title page.
