After joining the Society of Jesus at the age of 16 and studying philosophy for several years in France, he was sent to Quebec as a grammar instructor. Although he returned to France in 1709, he was sent to Canada once again in 1720 on orders to search for a water route across North America to Pacific, an endeavor which took him down the Mississippi to the Bahamas and Florida. He wrote several significant works of history, including a history of Santo Domingo (S. Domingue, published 1730-1731), a history of French North America (published in 1744) and the history of Paraguay listed here (first published in 1756).
