Marsham, Sir John
Chronicus Canon Aegyptiacus, Ebraicus, Graecus, et Disquisitiones.
London: Thomas Roycroft, 1672. First edition Folio, pp. [ii], 424, 427-438, 437-626, [3]; text is continuous, but lacks the index; Greek characters in the text. Contemporary calf, raised bands, spine decorated gilt in compartments. A very good copy, joints cracking. Bookplate of Sir Frederick Evelyn and label of J(ohn) E(velyn) on the front pastedown. Marsham's work which deals with the dating of ancient history, was said by William Wotton, the noted linguist and theologian, to have been the first to make Egyptian antiquities intelligible. This copy comes from the library of John Evelyn, 1620-1706, diarist, polymath, and founding member of the Royal Society, and subsequently that of his great great grandson Sir Frederick Evelyn.
