1724. First edition of the earliest complete German edition of Plato's Laws -- the last and longest of the Platonic dialogues. The translator was the Swiss-born Johann [sometimes Hans] Georg Schulthess (1724-1804), founder in 1749 of the Berliner Montagsgesellschaft, which was one of the centres of the German Enlightenment. His translation was reprinted in 1842. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 2 volumes, xv, 477; vii, 526 pp., contemporary half leather over marbled boards, rubbed, spines worn at heads with some loss, without the labels, occasional light browning and spotting, the second volume with a small dampstain running through lower inner margin and some light creasing of lower corners, still a good set overall, distinctly scarce.
