Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1871-1872. [English Literary Classic] FIRST EDITION. Four volumes, octavo (15 x 10 x 12cm). With half titles, but lacking errata slips. Contemporary black half calf with gilt decoration to spines, and recent replacement title labels in contrasting red and black morocco. Marbled paper over boards; all edges and endpapers marbled. Black ink ownership to first blank of each volume. Browning and spotting to preliminaries, with light occasional spotting throughout. Bindings heavily rubbed and bumped, especially to corners. Good. Set in the 1830s in Middlemarch, a fictional provincial town in England based on the city of Coventry in the Midlands. Widely seen as Eliot's greatest work, it is also acclaimed as one of the best English novels of the Victorian era. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
