(Americana) DOUGLASS, Frederick
My Bondage and My Freedom
New York: Miller, Orton & Mulligan Co, 1855. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Good. 5 1/8 X 7 3/4 Inches. 464 PP. A rare and important piece of Americana. One of three autobiographies written by Douglass, highlighting the transition from slave to freeman in mid-19th century America. This book was also noteworthy as a repudiation of its own of the then-prevailing sentiment that slaves were inferior intellectually and unable to learn and/or be educated. Engraved frontis portrait from a daguerrotype by J. C. Buttre. Original embossed cloth boards with title stamping to spine. Boards a bit sunned at spine and worn at edges and corners. Crown and foot of spine worn. A few spots to covers. A bit of foxing and toning as is to be expected. PO name in pencil and old bookseller (?) label on front pastedown. Light wear to edges. Binding remains sound in spite of the damage. An lower grade copy of a very important book.
