Lord Weary's Castle
New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1946. Second Edition. 69 pp., 8vo. The second edition, published a year after the first. With a very interesting autograph letter from Lowell (c. 100 words, signed), thanking Miss Mary Taylor Moore of Greensboro, North Carolina for sending him significant documents relating to his mother's family. Written on one half of an 8.5 x 11 in. sheet (now evenly tanned), the letter was originally folded twice to fit in an envelope; the blank half of the sheet has been taped to the front free endsheet of the book, and the tape has yellowed (also taped to the blank half of the sheet is the address, in Lowell's hand, clipped from the envelope). The written portion, however, is entirely free from tape and in very good condition save for a vertical fold in the center. The book itself has Miss Moore's ownership signature on front pastedown, and light tanning to pages, otherwise very good in a darkened and edgeworn jacket. Written from Lowell's office as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress, the letter reads, in part, "Your documents came at the right time . . . the lady who fell off the cliff was my great aunt . . . Mother remembers her well, and how she used to tell fanciful stories. I'm so glad that you thought of sending all this to me" and concludes, "Tomorrow I finish my one year job here — a great flurry of packing, farewells and arrivals." Lowell writes his address at the top of the sheet as "Lowell/Lib. of Congress/Washington, D.C." and gives the date as "Sep. 15" (the recipient has added in pencil the year, 1948).
