Rebecca (Two original screenplays: a Synopsis and Chapter Breakdown for the 1940 film)
Selznick International Pictures, Los Angeles, 1939. Two early scripts for the 1940 film, consisting of (1) a 1938 Synopsis by Franclien Macconnell and (2) a 1939 Chapter Breakdown by Mary Bowie. Both scripts issued for the studio's review of the novel's content in consideration for moving ahead with adaptation to film. Franclien Macconnel, "one of the best 'readers' from Val Lewton's story department" at Selznick's studios, according to Steve Wilson's 2014 "The Making of Gone with the Wind," as well as an assistant story editor for the studio, was the studio's expert on the aforementioned film, wrote this 39 page "Synopsis," dated October 10, 1938, of Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel for the studio for the forthcoming Alfred Hitchcock film. Rubber stamped on distribution page, script "A 2036." "Note" on first page of synopsis states: "Throughout the book no hint is given as to the heroine's name, . For synopsis purposes I am giving her the name of the authoress: Daphne.," the unnamed character of the novel would, for the film (as in du Maurier's novel), be given only the name of her husband, Mrs. de Winter. Mary Bowie, also a writer working at Val Lewton's story department, as both screenwriter and writing chapter breakdowns, at Selznick studios, wrote this 48 page "Chapter Breakdown of the Novel.," dated May 10, 1939. Rubber stamped on distribution page, script "A 2123." Both scripts are housed in a custom blue cloth, black quarter leather clamshell box, with rounded spine, raised bands, and titles in gilt.
