The Saga of Frankie and Johnny
Walter V. McKee, (NY, 1930. Small quarto. (viii), (52)pp. From an edition of 2050 copies, this is one of fifty specially-bound copies signed by the artist, and with an extra suite of the woodcuts. Illustrated with twenty-five full-page woodcuts by John Held, Jr., whose style provides a fitting tableau for this murder ballad that was inspired by a real crime of passion. These illustrations are also noteworthy for having been reprinted in the first issue of Playboy magazine. Held is best remembered for his illustration art, and designed the "Wise Men Fish Here" sign that once directed bibliophiles to the Gotham Book Mart. In a special binding of red morocco-backed patterned cloth boards. Spine a trifle toned, and with a few light rubbed spots; extra suite housed in original salmon colored envelope, which shows a few splits at folds. Housed in publisher's slipcase, which shows some wear and splitting. Near fine overall. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
