Illustrated with 70 tinted lithographic plates (including 12 in colour), each with a tissue guard, and many woodcuts. Rebound with the original publisher's purple cloth boards, decorated liberally in gilt to upper and blind to lower. Recent purple morocco spine with raised bands and gilt titles. All edges gilt. An ex-library copy with stamps to title page. Some repairs to margins of plates XI, XVII, XXI, XXVIII, XLIV and LV. No tissue guards for plates XII and XIII. Heavy chipping to edges of plate XXIX. Significant losses and repairs to margins of plate XLV. Light occasional spotting to plates generally, with some small occasional chips to plate margins and tissue guards. Corners bumped with some rubbing to cloth. Very good. Simultaneously published with the French edition. Most of the plates are after drawings by Texier, comprising floor plans, elevation drawings, engraved views, and colour illustrations of interior details of many important Byzantine churches in locations such as Thessalonika, Trebizond, and Bursa. Pullan edited the work form Texier's journals, at his request, and included accounts of his own work. This collaboration reflects journeys made at widely differing periods. Texier was in Asia Minor from 1833 to 1837, while Pullan was sent to Halicarnassus (Bodrum) in 1857 to survey the Mausoleum. C.T.
