Viaggio di Spizberga o' Grolanda fatto da Frederico Martens Amburghese l'Anno 1671.
Venise, Iseppo Prodocimo, 1680, 12mo, Original Carta Rustica Binding, manuscript title, text uncut. Scarce First edition of the Italian translation. An important journey in the history of the exploration of Spitsbergen. In 1671, the naturalist Friedrich Martens (1635-1699) embarked as a surgeon aboard a whaling ship from Hamburg (the Jonas im Walfisch or Jonah in the whale) who was leaving for a fishing season in the Arctic regions. The account of his trip appeared for the first time in German in 1675 Martens, a Hamburg doctor, completed his first botanical studies on the island of Spitzberg. The story of the journey is in any case very rich in information on that chilled climate, and of the birds, quadrupeds, fish, and rare plants that are born there, with the description of the whales, and other natural phenomena. Conway, No man's land, a history of Spitsbergen ., 1906, pp. 213-214. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
