Ozanne (N.P.)
Marine Militaire ou Recueil des Differens Vaisseaux qui Servent a la Guerre Suivis des Manoeuvres qui ont le Plus de Raport au Combat Ainsi qu'a l'Ataque et la Defence des Ports.
ND 1762 Lyon. engraved title, engraved coat of arms, with engraved dedication to the Duc de Choiseul, 50 engraved plates (numbered in sequence as issued), final plate is folding, plain endpapers, original marbled paper over boards, later (1900s) mottled goat spine, raised bands down spine, no title piece to spine, good and clean internally. AJS: The attractive plates show various types of warship of the period along with an explanatory text. There was a second edition in 1770, however, this was issued without the coat of arms and dedication as the Duc de Choiseul, Minister of Marine, had been dismissed on 24th December, 1770. The edition offered here is undated but was published in 1762 and is now considered the best issue. It is certainly uncommon. The second edition (1770) was issued in a slightly larger page size, however, the plates are weaker. Polak, entry 7234: Confirms the above details. Witt Collection: The leaves 21, 26 and 49 contain an engraved text only, the rest have a vignette at the top, engraved text underneath. First state of the first edition. The first 20 plates show the different types of ships from a 1st rate of 120 guns to a chebeck. [Attributes: First Edition]
