Ada Elizabeth (Betty) Swanwick, artist and illustrator
An archive of letters from Ada Elizabeth Swanwick (always known as 'Betty') [1915-1989], artist, novelist and teacher. A student of Edward Bawden, her work for London Transport designing their posters which she did for nearly twenty years between 1936 and 1954 is justly celebrated.
1973. This sequence of 10 letters is to the artist Adrian Ryan [1920-1998] From 1948-83 he taught at Goldsmith's and was a colleague of Swanwick's. The letters are chatty and informative regarding her views of her circle, demonstrating, too her fragility and isolation from her colleagues at Goldmsiths and the RCA. The final three are particularly poignant written at a time when her relationship with her partner, Barry Viney [teacher at Dulwich, typographer and botanical artist] was ending.
