Cosimo De Medici - Grand Duke of Tuscany
Official Latin Manuscript Document on Vellum, with Signature of Cosimo I de Medici, Duke of Florence and Tuscany,.
Florence, 1560. Original manuscript signature of Cosimo I de Medici (1519-1574), Duke of Florence and Tuscany, on an official Latin manuscript document on vellum, made at Cosimo I's Palazzo Ducale [Ducal Palace, now Palazzo Vecchio], half of which has been preserved, and measuring approximately 35,5 x 31 cm. A partial and significant document in a fine secretarial hand, later docketed to verso, with only mild age-toning, otherwise in very good condition, with gilt name header, and preserving the exceedingly scarce signature of Cosimo I. Signed in Cosimo's hand to bottom left of text, "Cos Med Florenzie, LDX" [1560], the present document is a certificate by Cosimo I de' Medici, then Duke of Florence, to grant a pension of 200 gold guilders to the royal chamberlain Hieronymus Trocto (Troctus) of Ferrara, upon his resignation. The month and day is given at the conclusion of the body of the text, as follows, "Datum Florenzie in Ducali Palatio Nostro, Decimo octavo las Februarÿ, Anni Déi ab eius salutifera incarnationé" [Given at Florence in our Dukes' Palace, the eighteenth of February, in the year of our incarnate Lord...] while the year is given in in Cosimo's hand alongside his signature, as what appears to be "LDX" in abbreviation for the year 1560. Provenance: From an important Tegernsee autograph collection, in a handwritten collector's folder with brief information on the content and purchaser's note: on 9th XI 1927 at Geering in Basel for 20 marks.. Manuscript.
