Angela Carter
Nights of the Circus
Chatto & Windus, 1984. Chatto & Windus. First edition and first print published by Chatto & Windus in 1984. This is a very near fine condition book. The wrapper presents as new. It is crisp and no wear to the tips or spine. On the back panel the laminate has been snagged at the top edge. Otherwise it is immaculate. Likewise the book presents as new and most likely unread. Angela Carter has signed without dedication to the title page. Rare to find in this condition. Nights at the Circus won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction in 1984. The novel focuses on the life and exploits of Sophie Fevvers, a woman who is - or so she would have people believe - a Cockney virgin, hatched from an egg laid by unknown parents and ready to develop fully fledged wings. At the time of the story, she has become a celebrated aerialiste, and she captivates the young journalist Jack Walser, who runs away with the circus and falls into a world that his journalistic exploits had not prepared him to encounter. . Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1984.
