The early printings were not large and the books tended to be well used--after all, many copies were not simply read but lived. Rebacked with the original spine laid down, gilt dull. Endpapers browned at edges, a dozen or so pages with ink notes. The front endpaper has an ownership name and statement; the rear endpaper has full-page notes by the owner to herself.
