The Golden Cockerel Greek Anthology A Selection of the Poems, Edited, with Translations into English Verse and an Introduction, by F L Lucas
London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1937. London: Golden Cockerel Press,, 1937. The exquisite Golden Cockerel Greek Anthology Quarto. Original black quarter pigskin, spine gilt lettered direct and with the Golden Cockerel device, brick-red cloth sides, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. 14 line-engravings on zinc by Lettice Sandford (12 full-page, title page vignette and tail-piece), letterpress printed in Greek and English, title page printed in terracotta and black. Minor scuff marks to front cover otherwise in excellent condition. First edition, first printing, number 190 of 206 copies printed on hand-made paper. A beautiful edition, edited and translated by F. L. Lucas, one of the finest Greek scholars of his generation - described by Virginia Woolf as "pure Cambridge: clean as a breadknife and as sharp" - gathering selections from fifty poets in a small compass. The illustrations by Lettice Sandford, sinuous and sensual, resembling the decoration of Greek vases, were executed deftly on zinc, a soft medium for the engraver to work.
