Reeve & Co, 1877. 1869-1875 COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL DRAWINGS OF FRESHWATER FISHES OF INDIA BY REGINALD BEAVAN, CAPTAIN IN BRITISH ARMY IN INDIA, FOR BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1877. Unique collection of 70+ original annotated pencil and pen & ink drawings on paper ( 4x6 to 12x19 inches) and 100+ annotated published lithographed illustrations mounted on individual sheets grouped by nomenclature. Some of the original drawings were subsequently published in a paper published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1872 (included) and in a book on freshwater fishes of India published in 1877 (1990 reprint included). A number of the drawings are colored, some dated between 1869 and 1875, and many include locations of species described. The collection of illustrations is contained in a wooden box bound as a book in blindstamped pebbled green cloth, with a paper title label on the spine, and marbled edges (8 x 11 x 2.5 inches, with a label inside the cover, "Stone's Patent Box for the safe and orderly keeping of all letters, papers and documents". The contents of the box are in very good condition, but the box is heavily worn. The artist/author, REGINAL BEAVAN (1843 - 1927), was Captain (later Colonel) in the British Army in India, and an ichthyologist, Corresponding Member of the Zoological Society of London. His younger brother, ROBERT CECIL BEAVAN (1841 - 1870), was Captain in the Bengal Staff Corps for 10 years, and an ornithologist, collecting specimens of birds and eggs that were donated to the Natural History Museum.
