CICERO, Marcus Tullius
[Works] Opera Quae Supersunt Omnia. Ad fidem optimarum editionum diligentr expressa. Voluminibus XX [20 volumes]
Published by Glasgow, Rob. et And. Foulis, 1747. Glasgow, Rob. et And. Foulis, 1747. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1747-49, 20 volumes; 12mo. A beautifully bound set in contemporary full dark olive morocco. Spines richly gilt decorated in delicate floral pattern, double red lettering/numbering pieces, gilt fillet borders to the sides, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, slight wear to one head bands and one foot, minor rubbing, but a fine and delicate set. Possibly French? A portable set suitable for a traveller. FIRST FOULIS EDITION, one of the most typographically distinguished and scholarly productions of the press, intended to rival Elzevir's printing of a century earlier. This set is unusual for two reasons: firstly its size. The smaller 12mo pot rather than foolscap duodecimo, and a binding that is almost certainly French, and a finely decorated morocco of the period.
