[Nineteenth-Century Watercolor Portrait of Woman holding a Letter]
[Np., c. 1850s-1860s?]. Watercolor on oval board. (The overall composition and plain background may indicate that this image was rendered after a photograph.) 8¾ x 7¼ inches. In modern frame, glazed. Small stain at upper right not affecting portrait; some wear and staining to mount; very good. Attractive mid-19th century watercolor portrait of a woman seated at a table or writing desk and holding a letter. Her face, coiffure, and lace-trimmed, black crinoline dress are skillfully rendered. The woman sits at a red cloth covered table with writing accoutrements. Her confident pose holding a letter suggests that she is both genteel and literate.
