Garcia Tellez, Alfonso
Historia de una vivienda para haser una ofrenda al Santo Tecuil / Autor Alfonso Garcia Tellez / 15 Abril de 1981
[San Pablito Pahuatlan, Puebla, Mexico]: Manuscript, 1981. Hand-made volume, 17 x 13cm, pp 22, accordion-fold pages, on indigenous amate paper, made from the bark of the amate and other trees, including 18 amate paper cut-outs depicting native Otomi divinities or demons. Title page reads "Ceremonia religiosa contra la brujeria." Each page contains a hand-lettered description of the various steps of the "curacion" or progression of the ritual, often rather complicated, through its various stages. Below that, are the cut-outs, or "munecos" which were believed to have a magical quality. The ritual is a curious mixture of Christian and Otomi divinities, aimed at releasing the soul of an ancestor - abuelito - from Purgatory, where he has been imprisoned because of his previous sins. The ceremony is to be carried out in the dwelling of the ancestor while on earth. Garcia Tellez himself was from a family of curanderos and because relatively well-known from these hand-made booklets: there are a number of articles on him on the internet. With the help of his wife and children, who did the lettering, he made a total of 5 different books, numerous copies of each; however each copy was unique due to small differences of detail. This copy has the title, and the name (but not the signature), date and place of composition, all on the front cover. The contents are bright and clear, and the original red ribbons are present. See photos. Very good copy.
