[Lawrence, Ks, 1969. 30,[1]pp. Original pictorial wrappers. Minor staining to wrappers. Internally clean. Very good. An uncommon directory "compiled for the convenience of the Black Citizens of East and North Lawrence in finding the addresses and phone numbers of their friends and colleagues." The work was sponsored by a quartet of local service organizations - the Ballard Community Center, the East Lawrence Service Center, the Pennsylvania House, and the Coordinating Committee of Black Community, with a short paragraph on the mission and activities of each entity. The Coordinating Committee of Black Community describes itself as follows: "The C.C.B.C. is a recent organization designed to act as a spokesman for the Black Community-at-Large of Lawrence, Kansas. The purpose of the organization is to advise black people of their rights, defend and safeguard the rights of black people at all times, prohibit abuse of black children in the school system, [and] provide black representation in the ruling systems of the City Government." The directory itself includes listings for churches, clubs & organizations, black-owned businesses, and an alphabetical residential listing. The nine churches are listed as "Baptist," "Methodist," and "Christian." The twenty clubs include the "Charmettes Club," "The Self- Culture Club," the "Prince Hall Court Heroines of Jericho," and "The Order of the Royal Court of Cyrene." The six black-owned businesses are cafe, billiard room, beauty salon, two barber shops, and a barbecue joint.
