Finely bound by Bayntun in red half calf, titles in gilt to black and green morocco spine labels, compartments tooled in gilt, red cloth boards, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Slight bumping to upper tips, the binding otherwise bright and firm, very occasional faint foxing, else internally clean; a very good copy. Monochrome frontispiece and 20 similar plates of portraits and views, 12 maps and plans, of which 7 folding. First edition, presentation copy inscribed on the title page "Lord Kitchener of Khartoum, With the Author's Compliments". The recipient, Horatio Herbert, Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850–1916), was a senior British Army officer and colonial administrator who won notoriety for his imperial campaigns, most especially his scorched earth policy against the Boers. A brilliant tactician and ruthless commander, he was credited in 1898 for winning the Battle of Omdurman and securing control of the Sudan for which he was made Baron Kitchener of Khartoum and Aspall. He served as governor-general of Sudan from 19 January to 18 December 1899; a controversial figure, and "despite some hostility among politicians and officers, from the Sudan until his death Kitchener was to the British public a popular imperial hero" (ODNB). According to Raugh, this is an "eyewitness account, written by two lieutenants who participated in the Dongola Expedition".
