[Pynchon, Thomas]
Telephone Directory, Boeing Airplane Company [cover title]
(Seattle: Boeing, 1962). (Seattle: Boeing , 1962). Small tape with a name on front; fine.. Large 8vo (approx. 7-1/2 X 9-1/2 in.); unpag. leaves in a sixteen-prong ring-binder; embossed cover in high mid-century style, with the image of a telephone on the front and "Think Safety" on the rear. Internal directory for the use of employees of the Boeing corporation, a roster that at the time of this publication included the American novelist Thomas Pynchon. Pynchon's name appears in the alphabetical list of personnel along with his telephone exchange and a code indicating the location of his job in the Missile Production Center. Pynchon worked for Boeing from 1960 to the fall of 1962, following his graduation from Cornell University and while he working on his first novel, V (published 1963). While his time at Boeing, as with much of his life, is shrouded in mystery, it appears that he did technical writing and contributed to the internal organs "Minuteman Service News" and "Bomarc Service News," each connected with Boeing's ballistic missile programs. This experience informed material that he developed in V, where Boeing is represented as the Yoyodyne Corporation, and in his landmark 1973 novel Gravity's Rainbow. A rare survival.
