Vladimir Nabokov
Speak, Memory
1951. Book Title: Speak, Memory Author: Vladimir Nabokov Edition: 1st Publisher: Gollancz Year: 1951 Details: First UK edition and first print published by Gollancz in 1951. This is a very good ++ copy. The very fragile first issue gollancz wrapper (without the daily mail insignia on the spine) has a small chip to the top of the spine and is price clipped. Otherwise it is very clean and complete. It is rare to find the wrapper in such nice shape. The book also comes with the original daily mail wraparound band. The green boards are very bright and there is very little if any wear to the corners or edges. There a couple of light small scorch marks to the front free end paper and back end paper. Overall condition is very good ++ and scarce in first issue and with the band. Speak, Memory is an autobiographical memoir of the author's life from 1903 until his emigration to America in 1940. The first twelve chapters describe Nabokov's remembrance of his youth in an aristocratic family living in pre-revolutionary Saint Petersburg and at their country estate Vyra, near Siverskaya. The three remaining chapters recall his years at Cambridge and as part of the Russian émigré community in Berlin and Paris. In 2011, Time Magazine listed the book among the 100 all time non-fiction books indicating that its "impressionist approach deepens the sense of memories relived through prose that is gorgeous, rich and full". Please see photos Our Grading: Like New - Mint, Fine, Good enough to give as a present Very Good - Clean condition with no significant faults. May have a few minor defects.
