Sarasate, Pablo de, violinist and composer (1844-1908).
Autograph letter signed ("Pablito Sarasate").
Königsberg, 14. I. 1879. 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To a close friend of the artist expressing his desire to play Brahm's Violin Concerto (Op. 77). Sarasate informs his friend that he will probably perform in Aachen at the Lower Rhenish Music Festival of 1879 and that he hopes that Brahms will authorize him to play the concerto on this occasion: "Il est plus probable que je jouerai à la prochaine fête de musique du Rhin à Aix la chappelle, et mon grand rêve d'obtenir du grand maitre Bramhs [!] l'autorisation d'apprendre d'ici là son Concerto". Although he knows that it will be almost impossible he felt impelled to communicate his desire that "entirely possesses him" to his friend: "je sais bien que pour beaucoup de raisons ce sera presque impossible, mais il faut toujours éssayer, [.] et puis il faillait d'abord vous Communiquer le grand désir que me possède tout entier". Sarasate asks the recipient to tell him whether there is any possibilty to fulfil his wish and make him "happier than a Spanish King". Knowing that his friend would "dare the impossible" in reaching out to Brahms and Joseph Joachim, to whom the piece was dedicated, he tells him to assure them of his lifelong gratitude: "je sais que vous m'aimez assez pour tenter l'impossible auprès des maitres Brahms, Joachim, etc. dites leur que je leur en serai reconnaissant toute ma vie". - Ironically, Pablo de Saraste famously refused to perform Brahms's Violin Concerto, allegedly exclaiming: "Why should I stand there while the oboe has the only proper melody in the whole piece?"
