Barnes, Djuna
A Book
New York: Horace Liveright, 1923. 220p., frontis-portrait and five more illustrations by author (portraits; several signed in the plate as "Djuna" - NB: while all plates called-for are present there are remnants of the gray stock used for the plates in the gutter between pages 170-171. The plate is present in its correct position opposite of page 172. Possibly misplaced then moved during binding or corrected by a previous owner). A small mottled dampstain and sun-fade to spine, which has wear to top and tail rims, toning and small faint splash-stain to paper title label, black papered boards are dim and somewhat handled. Textblock paper a little toned and title page and adjacent leaves bear a faint cloudy discoloration along top margin. Hinges are sound and we see no ownership or any other markings; a good-only copy of the first edition. Messerli 2. Barnes' second book and first full-length publication by a major publishing house includes plays, short stories and poems. The revised edition of 1929 "A Night Among the Horses" is Grier A* B* C** This contains all but three of the stories in the later revised edition but includes six of Barnes' illustrations. Much scarcer than the revised.
