Vseukrains'ke fotokinoupravlinnia (VUFKU)
Al'bom ukrains'koho kino [An album of Ukrainian cinema]. Wrapper title: Ukrains'ke kino [Ukrainian cinema]. Le cinéma ukrainien
Kiev: VUFKU, 1926. Small quarto (26 × 17.5 cm). Original beige pictorial wrappers; 51 pp. Wrappers somewhat worn; chip to rear wrapper; water stain to lower right corner of text. Scarce promotional album of the All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration (VUFKU), the state-run film industry administration active from 1922 to 1930. In its early years, "the VUKFU was a 'very experimental and adventurous centre,' which published a journal, Kino, that informed its readers of European, American, and Asian productions, and nourished such artists as Dziga Vertov and Alexander Dovzhenko" (Irena R. Makaryk, Modernism in Kiev, 443). The short introductory text in Ukrainian and French is followed by photographs of key directors and actors associated with VUFKU in the 1920s, such as Dovzhenko, Grycher, Vertov, Al. Solov'ev, H. Tasin, and Marko Tereshchenko. Also shown are scenes from famous films, one view of the interior of the studio, as well as the process of its construction. "La Revolution d'Octobre 1917 a donné naissance à l'Art cinématographique ukraïnien. rien que chez nous, dans l'Union des Républiques Socialistes Soviètiques, on a su considérer le Cinéma comme un véritable Art." (preface). KVK, OCLC show a single copy, at the University of Amsterdam (the copy at Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin is marked a war loss). [Attributes: Soft Cover]
