Petrograd: Proletkul't, 1919. Octavo (21 × 14.5 cm). Original illustrated wrappers; 61, [3] pp. Unopened and uncut. Wrappers lightly chipped; bookshop stamp to front wrapper, still about very good. Fifth edition. First volume of poetry by the popular proletarian poet, publicist, and translator Il'ia Sadof'ev (1889-1965). The collection went through six editions in just two years and was positively reviewed by the symbolist poet Valery Briusov, who wrote that of all the Proletkult poets Sadof'ev's poetry "is the most original in form," calling him a "poet of strong, enthusiastic feeling and of great revolutionary pathos.for which he found the appropriate expression." A peasant's son, Sadof'ev had two years of formal education and came to St, Petersburg at thirteen to work in a factory, taking part in underground revolutionary activity during the 1905 Revolution. He was arrested and exiled numerous times and was freed from his last prison term in Iakutia by the 1917 Revolution. In 1921 he became one of the co-organizers of the "Cosmist" group of proletarian poets. After the Russian Civil War, Sadof'ev headed the literary branch of the Leningrad Proletkult. This volume is part of the "Proletkult library" series. The Proletkult movement aimed to create a uniquely proletarian culture by encouraging and supporting artistic work by the members of the working class. Founded in 1917 at a congress of worker creative workshops, Proletkult began as a loose coalition of amateur workers' art, theater, and writing clubs, reached its zenith in 1921, and was disbanded by 1924.
