CZESCHKA, Carl Otto; [VIENNA SECESSION]; [WIENER WERKSTÄTTE]
MAIDEN AND WILD BOAR OVER A POOL OF WATER - AN ORIGINAL PEN AND INK DRAWING FOR "DIE QUELLE"
Original Artwork, 1899. Two drawings by Carl Otto Czeschka on opposite sides of a single sheet of card (34cm x 13.5cm) for use in volume 1 ("Allerlei Gedanken in Vignettenform") of the Secessionist journal "Die Quelle" ("The Source"). The first, a finished pen and ink drawing for plate 28: "Maiden and Wild Boar over a Pool of Water". The second, a pencil prototype sketch for plate 3: "Centaur with a Bow". The pen and ink drawing remains in fine condition, clean and bright, with just a little minor wear to the very edges of the sheet (not affecting the image). The pencil drawing has loss to the corners where previously mounted to display its counterpart, but is otherwise in very good condition. Unframed. A friend of Gustav Klimt, he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna (1902-07), where he was one of Oskar Kokoschka's first teachers, as well as at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg (1907). During this time he became one the most celebrated and prolific illustrators of the movement. The three volume series "Die Quelle" ("The Source") produced by publisher Martin Gerlach, was one of the finest outlets for Secessionist graphic design, and incorporated work by Czeshka, Max Benirschke and Koloman Moser.
