Christian DOPPLER: BEITRÄGE ZU FIXSTERNENKUNDE. [Contributions to knowledge of the fixed stars.] Aus den Abhandlungen der königl. böhm. Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften (V. Folge, Band 4) besonders abgedruckt. [Offprint]. With 1 lithographic plate showing 4 illustrations. Prag: In Commission bei Borrosch und André (Gottlieb Haase) 1846. 4mo (28:21,8 cm). p. [1-3], 4-26, pl. [1]. Lithography and letterpress on fresh machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on blue-coloured stock with black ornamental lithographic title printing. First and very scarce offprint in the original wrappers, of this most important paper by Doppler, where he suggests to use photography or daguerreotype for the direct determination of diameters of fixed star, as well as to determine the level of brightness of fixed stars with the photometer he constructed (15 years before Zöllner). Condition: Spine with five tiny cuttings of former binding, wrappers with some barely seeable spots and wear, overall in good condition. Rarity: ABPC (1973ff.) and JAP/APO (1988ff.) record no copies at all at auction; no copies in trade. Reference: Schuster: Doppler IV, 42 and 43.
