TREMBLEY, A[braham].
Mémoires, Pour Servir à l'Histoire d'un Genre de Polypes d'Eau Douce, à Bras en Forme de Cornes:
Chez Jean & Herman Verbeek. A Leide. First edition first impression. 4to, 1744. pp. xv, (i), 324, (i) Avis au Relieur, (i) blank. 13 folding engraved plates by PIERRE LYONET, fine engraved vignettes to each of the four Mémoires by J.v.SCHLEY after C. PRONCK, also tailpieces to each Mémoire. Finely rebound in modern calf, some leaves in the first third of the book, top corners, are very faintly damp-marked, ex libris RICHARD FREEMAN with his signature and notes at the front, a very good copy. *GARRISON-MORTON #307- 'Trembley was one of the pioneers of experimental morphology. His experiments were of great importance in the study of regeneration of lost parts, he was the first to make permanent grafts and to witness cell division.' One of the fundamental works in the advancement of science in the 18th Century. The four vignettes are of especial interest in that they are not simply ornamental but illustrate the catching of the hydra polyps and their examination. Each vignette is described in detail in the Preface. Trembley, a Fellow of the Royal Society of London, submitted some papers to the Philosophical Transactions, edited in 1743 by CROMWELL MORTIMER - 'Some papers lately read before the Royal Society concerning the fresh-water polypus.' [See FREEMAN BNHB #2691].
