London: Religious Tract Society, [1842]. Remarkable Insects is an easily readable field guide that merges natural history with Biblical stories and Christian morals. The first tract, ÒThe Honey Bee,Ó discusses a variety of moral and religious topics, like the Òevils of idlenessÓ and the presence of honey in Bible stories, within the framework of scientific information. The tract details the anatomy of bees, pollination, the structure and geometry of hives, the life cycle of bees, and even the history of honey as a preservative and the fascination of classical Greek scientists with bees. The other tracts in the book cover flies, ants, spiders, and gall-building insects. Five tracts in one volume. 4.5 by 5.5 inches. . iv pp., 32, 32, 32, 32, 32 pp. Hand-colored pictorial title-page. Dozens of hand-colored illustrations of insects and plants interspersed throughout. PublisherÕs red pictorial cloth lettered and elaborately stamped in gilt and blindstamped with decorative floral border. Spine lettered in gilt and ruled in blind. Some soiling and fading to covers and a bit of rubbing to extremities. All edges gilt. Yellow endpapers. Some slight toning to margins but overall the pages are very clean. BooksellerÕs ticket on front pastedown and binderÕs ticket on final pastedown. Ink gift inscription on front free endpaper reads ÒEthel May / from dear Mr. Nelly / January 7th 1881.Ó Overall a very good, very bright copy of a scarce book. First edition. OCLC lists eight copies.
