Boston: Published for the author, 1875. Third Edition. Hardcover. Owner name of Jenny M. Morgan on the half-title page; scattered pencil and red pencil marks, usually in the margins; paper split to front gutter but cover tight. Light wear to spine tips; slight loss of cloth along rear spine edge. Very Good to Near Fine. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and a gilt portrait on the front cover, the same portrait blindstamped on the rear cover; 324 pages. Portrait frontispiece with the original tissue guard. The Note to the Reader tipped in before the Preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. She told her story to a woman named Olive Gilbert, who set it in writing as Truth was illiterate. This edition combines the earlier (1850) edition with an up-to-date rendering of the abolitionist's life by Frances W. Titus, Sojourner Truth's "Trusted Scribe" and a staunch campaigner for women's rights. "The first 125 pages of the 1875 edition of Truth's NARRATIVE are a reprint of the 1850 edition. The remainder of the text is a collection of newspaper articles and celebrity autographs taken from a personal collection of Truth's that she called the 'Book of Life.' When Truth decided to issue an updated version of her biography in 1875 to help pay for a grandson's medical bills, she asked Frances Titus (1816-1894) to publish excerpts from her 'Book of Life'' as a supplement to Gilbert's text, trusting 'her scribe [Titus] to make the selections'" (Zachary Hutchins: DOCUMENTING THE AMERICAN SOUTH).
