Contemporary thick pasteboards, faint hand-lettered title to spine, untrimmed edges. Light soiling, some wear to spine ends and corners. Light toning and occasional faint spotting to text, minor worming in a few places with no loss to text. Notes, in neat hand, are mostly in French with some passages in Latin and Greek. $9,500. * A mountainous region located in French-speaking Switzerland, the canton of Vaud, whose current capital is Lausanne, beloged to Savoy until 1536. It was conquered by the Republic of Bern that year and soon became a center of the Protestant Reformation. The annotator of our copy of Les Loyx et Statuts du Pay de Vaud displays a deep knowledge of Vaud's history, laws and customs and those of neighboring cantons and countries. He reviews the history of the canton, evoking its customs from the Middle Ages to the advent of the Republic of Bern. He locates the peculiarities of Vaud's customary law in this complex history. His degree of erudition is impressive. He cites Roman law, Lombardian and Carolingian law and several eighteenth-century scholars.
