Apendice a la relación del viage al Magallanes
1793. Madrid. Viuda de Ibarra. 4to. 2 ff., 128, 1 folding table and 1 folding map. Contemporary red morocco gilt, with supralibros of Charles III on boards, double-fillet and roll-tooled borders to boards, raised bands to spine with simple tooling, green morocco lettering piece, blue silk endpapers, spots of soiling and very light rubbing, else fine. A very good copy overall, tall and clean, only light occasional marginal damp.- First edition, a fine copy bound in red morocco with the arms of Charles III of Spain, bound post mortem, as the Apendice was printed in 1793 and Charles III just before; normally this work is found bound with theRelación del ultimo viage al Estrecho de Magallanes de la fragata de S. M. Santa Maria de la Cabeza, however they are different publications bibliographically and thus complete in itself, Palau gives the high valuation of 60 Pesetas for 1926 and 1,000 Pesetas for 1969.The fact that even after the King´s death there was a desire to have the book presented with his arms is a testament to the magnitude of the expedition commissioned by the crown, and the respect held for the King. In 1793, an Appendix to the Relacion was published “Obra interesante y bien publicada” (Palau); this part is focused on giving an historical overview of former expeditions to the region, including those of Drake and Bougainville, constituting itself as an invaluable source of information of the Magellan Strait. The illustration comprises a folding map of the Strait. Palau, 352515;Sabin, 16765 (for both parts);Hill, 1756.
