[Medieval illuminated initial]
Historiated Initial 'S' Showing the Resurrection. Illuminated single leaf with musical notation and full decorated border tempera and gold on Parchment. Italy, Lombardy, ca. 1475-1486.
Italy, Lombardy, ca. 1475-1486. Parchment leaf from an antiphonary; 500 x 350 mm illuminated with a historiated initial 'S' (150 x 160 mm) on burnished golden ground. Written in an Italian Littera Rotunda, square musical notation on four-line bars with the lower line of each tetragram highlighted in red; elaborately decorated full border with tendriled foliage and flowers, incorporating some drolleries and medallions representing saints. One smaller illuminated 1-line initial 'B' on the lowest line, painted in mauve, red, blue and green on a square golden ground (770 x 570 mm). All headed by six lines of rubricated text. Trimmed to the edge of the decorated border, colours of the decorated floral border partly rubbed or flaked off, burnished gold of the initial square ground partly rubbed off and a bit tarnished. A few small retouches to the blue sky in the background of the initial. St John and King David in the borders a bit rubbed, letters of the text written in brown ink slightly faded. Otherwise in fine condition.- Provenance: Perhaps originating from the same parent manuscript, a choir book made for Galeazzo Maria Sforza, as the cuttings preserved in the Wallace collection(?); Florence, Gonnelli (Asta 27, 3rd October 2019, lot 1074) and offered with an export license. This splendid initial'S' opens the Ambrosian responsory «Sacri fontis aqua perennis», which is sung in the Baptistry before the annunciation of the resurrection on Easter Sunday.
