Internally clean, tight and very good. An artistically arranged photographic album of the settlement of Shanghai and the surrounding country. The views are splendidly reproduced, and present the principal buildings of the "Paris of the Orient". This very uncommon album shows scenes on its streets and river life, together with interesting and beautiful illustrations of the country just beyond the borders of the municipality. Contains 57 attractive illustrations, such as "the Woosung village", "Shanghai club", "scenes in the settlement etc", "the garden bridge", "town hall", "tea house in the native city", and others. We can date this publication thanks to the advertisement published in "the Chinese Recorder" of December 1905. Kelly & Walsh Ltd. was formed in 1876 through the amalgamation and partnership of two local Shanghai booksellers: Kelly and Co. and F. & C. Walsh. The company was incorporated on 1st July 1885, at that time it was located at No. 11 The Bund, before moving to 66 Nanking Road in 1918, with offices also at 12 Nanking Road. Active from the 1880s through the 1930s, with publications from cities including Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and Yokohama, Kelly and Walsh headquarter moved to Hong Kong following the occupation of China by the Japanese, and was ultimately sold to book seller Swindon Book Co.
